Job Description
The Open University of Kenya aims to address the pressing issue of limited capacity in traditional universities by employing innovative teaching and learning methodologies, including online and distance education. By leveraging technology and flexible learning modes, the university seeks Assistant Director, Corporate Communications and Marketing to provide Strategic Communication Plans: Designing and implementing comprehensive communication and marketing strategies

The Duties And Responsibilities Shall Include But Are Not Limited To:
- Developing Strategic Communication Plans: Designing and implementing comprehensive communication and marketing strategies aligned with the University’s goals and objectives. This involves identifying key audiences, crafting targeted messaging, and selecting appropriate communication channels;
- Overseeing Content Creation: Managing the creation and dissemination of engaging content across various platforms, including websites, social media, newsletters, and press releases. Ensuring that all content reflects the University’s brand identity and values;
- Media Relations and Outreach: Serving as a primary point of contact for media inquiries and cultivating positive relationships with journalists and media outlets;
- Drafting press releases, coordinating media interviews, and monitoring media coverage to enhance the University’s visibility and reputation;
- Brand Management: Protecting and promoting the University’s brand image through consistent messaging, visual identity standards, and brand positioning strategies and monitoring brand perception and reputation metrics to inform branding decisions;
- Collaboration and Coordination: Working closely with cross-functional teams, including academic Departments, administrative units, and external partners to align communication and marketing efforts with institutional priorities. Facilitating collaboration and knowledge-sharing to maximize impact and efficiency;
- Data Analysis and Performance Measurement: Utilizing data analytics tools and metrics to track the effectiveness of communication and marketing campaigns and analyzing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as website traffic, social media engagement, and audience demographics to optimize strategies and demonstrate ROI;
- Leadership and Team Management: Providing leadership and guidance to a team of Communications and Marketing professionals, including setting clear objectives, providing constructive feedback, and fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration. Mentoring staff members to support their professional development and ensure alignment with Departmental goals.
Requirements For Appointment
For appointment to this Grade, one MUST have:
- A Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Marketing, Mass Communication, Public Relations, Corporate Communications, Communication Studies, Media Studies, International Relations from an accredited and recognized institution;
- Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following: Marketing, Mass Communication, Public Relations, Communications Studies, Media Studies, or Corporate Communications from an accredited and recognized institution
OR - Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences with a Postgraduate Diploma in any of the following disciplines: Marketing, Mass Communication, Public Relations, Communication Studies or Media Studies from a recognized institution;
- At least twelve (12) years relevant work experience with at least three (3) years as a Chief Corporate Communications and Marketing Officer in a University or its equivalent;
- Leadership and Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks cumulatively;
- Certificate of Membership to a Professional Body from a recognized institution;
- Certificate in computer application skills;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and;
- Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
