Phlebotomists Purpose :
To perform venipuncture and skin punctures competently and expediently in order to obtain samples for analysis.
Responsibilities
1. Always identifies correct in-Patients of all ages by comparing name and medical record number on requisition with name and medical record number on Patients wristband before venipuncture.
2. Always identifies correct out-patients of all ages by requesting the patient or guardian to state his/her full name and comparing with the name on the requisition and confirm UHID number.
3. Draw blood samples properly using established Laboratory procedures and with as little Patient discomfort as possible. Instruct patients the correct way to collect urine, sputum etc.
4. Always accurately label, initial and date all samples collected, maintaining awareness of timed specimen and their importance.
5. Prioritize STAT, urgent and scheduled orders.
6. Maintain clean and neat workstation.
7. Maintain adequate supplies in workstation.
8. Follow all Laboratory safety rules and report any possible hazards to safety officer.
9. Share appropriate communication with other Laboratory staff involving difficult venipuncture, timed specimen etc.
10. Orient and guide new staff and students assigned to Phlebotomy workstation
11. Perform any other duty assigned from time to time by your supervisor.
Job Requirements for Phlebotomists
Certificate in phlebotomy,
Experience in busy clinical laboratory,
Diploma in medical laboratory science is an added advantage
