Job Purpose for Technicians

To assist the surgeons during a procedure, prepare and organize operating rooms, clean and sterilize equipment and maintain sterile environment.

Responsibilities

1. Setting up the instruments and equipment that is required for the procedure.
2. Sterilizing equipment and taking an inventory to ensure there are enough supplies for surgery.
3. Preparing sterile operating rooms for surgeries.
4. Taking a count of all surgical instruments and supplies prior to the operation.
5. Recounting surgical instruments and supplies at the end of the end of the operation
6. Preparing patients for surgery by washing and disinfecting incision sites.
7. Providing support during surgery by passing instruments and other supplies.
8. Staying up-to-date on surgical technology, medical terminology and procedures.
9. Working well with surgeons, Fellows, Resident surgeons, Perioperative Nurses and general surgical team.
10. Helping provide great patient care
11. Assist surgical team by taking tissue samples and other specimens during surgery for further analysis.
12. Maintaining an overall environment throughout the surgery
13. To ensure that there is teamwork in the unit.
14. Facilitate patient comfort
15. Facilitate communication with patients and relatives.
16. Facilitate management of patient records recognizing rules of patients’ confidentiality and privacy.
17. Facilitate the maintenance of department inventory and supplies as instructed.
18. During the surgical procedure, the scrub Technician can take the role of:

Circulating personnel, with the following additional duties:

• Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient
• Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens
• Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis
• Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly -Handles patient documentation)
• Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery
• Scrub personnel, with the following additional duties:
• Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them.

20. Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by supervisor.
